When People Treat You Differently: Living, Creating, and Thriving With Brain Plasticity

There comes a moment for many people with neurological conditions when you realize something has shifted, not necessarily in you, but in how others see you. Today I want to talk about something deeply personal: what happens when people learn you have a neurological condition and begin treating you differently.

It can happen anywhere. A comment on Facebook.A casual conversation with someone you meet while walking around the neighborhood. Suddenly, you notice a change in tone — maybe curiosity, maybe discomfort, maybe assumptions being made that don’t reflect who you actually are. If you’ve experienced this, I want you to hear this clearly: don’t let their reaction get you down. You are doing your best.

When my doctor first began working with me on brain plasticity, he suggested something unexpected — that I start making jewelry. Before this chapter of my life, I was an engineer. My days were structured, technical, and analytical. Jewelry-making was completely unfamiliar territory, and that was the point. Creating art required me to use entirely new areas of my brain, building fresh neural pathways through hands-on creativity. What started as an exercise became a transformation.

Over time, I didn’t just try jewelry-making — I became an artist.

Today, my work includes jewelry design, metal work, and photography. Each piece represents growth, adaptation, and proof that our brains are capable of learning, healing, and expanding in ways we might never expect.

My art is more than personal expression — it’s also a way to give back.

I donate my net proceeds to my foundation to help others who are navigating similar neurological journeys. Creativity gave me a new way forward, and supporting others allows that growth to ripple outward.

If someone treats you differently because of a neurological condition, remember:Their reaction is about their understanding, not your worth.

Your brain is adaptable.Your creativity matters. And your journey — wherever you are on it — is valid.

If you’re curious to see what I’ve been creating, you can view my work here.
