Some friendships are built in the most unexpected ways. When I first met Luke, he was just 10 years old, and over the years, our bond has grown into something truly special. Without grandchildren of my own, Luke became like a grandson to me. What started as afternoons of watering plants and mowing the grass quickly turned into a relationship filled with laughter, conversations, and lessons shared across generations.
By the time Luke turned 14, I encouraged him to pick up the guitar. We dove into the sounds of Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, country classics, and even jazz. With time, lessons, and endless hours of practice, Luke blossomed into a musician with incredible talent. He has what they call “a natural ear” — the rare ability to hear a song and almost immediately play it back. Watching him discover music has been nothing short of inspiring.

Two years later, I had the joy of taking Luke to see Eric Clapton live at Ohio State’s Mershon Auditorium. We were in the very front row, so close that if we had reached out, we could have touched Clapton (though, of course, we might have ended up in jail for that!). The night was unforgettable. As someone who has admired Clapton for nearly six decades, sharing the experience with Luke felt like coming full circle.

I couldn’t help but notice how much Luke reminded me of Clapton’s own beginnings. Clapton often shared in interviews about being shy despite his extraordinary skill. Luke is the same way — reserved about his talent, even though his playing leaves people in awe. Alongside the guitar, he’s also a gifted pianist, having studied since the age of four, thanks to his family’s love of music.

That evening was more than just a concert; it was a celebration of music, growth, and connection. I’m deeply grateful to Luke’s parents for taking us along and making it possible. Watching Luke step into his passion has been a gift, and I can’t wait to see where his music will take him next.
